Educational Structure

The school has an enrollment of 81 children for this current academic year 2011-2012 who follows the French educational system. It provides education from nursery to primary school. The teaching program for the secondary/high school is provided by the “Centre National d’Enseignement à Distance” (CNED – National Center for an Education at a Distance), followed up on a daily basis by qualified educational tutors.
Nursery School (2 to 5 years old)
  • A nursery/pre-school class TPS–PS–MS consisting of 3 levels: from 2 to 4 years.
  • English classes starting from 2 years old.
  • A kindergarten/1st grade class GS–CP (elementary education): from 5 to 6 years old.
Primary School (6 to 11 years old)

A 1st/2nd grade class CP-CE1 & a 3rd/4th/5th grade class CE2-CM1-CM2, combined respectively. Starting the 2nd grade class, it is primordial – for the pupil to be accepted – that he/she is already in the French Educational system or any other equivalent one (requiring an interview with the parent). The English classes are taught on a 4 hours per week basis. The primary school follows the national directives of the Ministry of Education & the AEFE (academic cycles, guidance act, school project, instructions of April 2008, etc.).

Secondary/High School (6th to 12th grade)

The teaching program is under a tutoring system dictated by the CNED (National Center for Education at a Distance). This cycle is available on the school premises on a daily basis by qualified educational instructors. The two foreign languages taught are: English & Spanish.

  • Time Table

School starts from 7h30 till 12h30. However, the CNED pupils have some afternoon classes in order to keep up with the secondary/high school workload.

  • Syllabus

It is about a French syllabus with some room allowing the study of the history/geography of the hosting country. Introduction of EMILE (Enseignement d’une Matière Intégrée en Langue Etrangère – Teaching of an integral subject in a foreign language) in different topics such as theatre, science, sport & music.

  • Exams

The French School of Lusaka is affiliated to the regional educational authority of “Académie de la Réunion” for the national diplomas of the 9th grade (Brevet – DNB) & the 12th grade (Baccalauréat). The exams for the Baccalaureate take place at the “Lycée Français Jules Verne” in Johannesburg.

  • English

All pupils benefit from a reinforced program in English, 4 hours a week. Those courses are given by a qualified teacher. The work is divided by groups of the same level, allowing the pupils to evolve all along the academic year.

  • IT Classes

Currently, the school has Pentium multimedia computers. The pupils can regularly practice the IT classes on specialized educational programs. They are put in real-teaching situations so that they can earn a B2I diplomas at the end of the 5th grade.

  • Physical Education & Sports

1½ hour to 2 hours weekly of physical education & sports are provided to all.

  • Extracurricular Activities

Extracurricular activities are offered from 13h15 to 15h15. For the nursery/pre-school classes, an afternoon care is offered weekly from 13h15 till 14h15.

  • Tutoring Classes

Tutoring classes are provided by the teachers for needy pupils twice a week for 45mn each.

  • Day Care Service

A day care service is available for free to all pupils before class hours from 7h10 till 7h30. A free supervision during recession from 12h30 till 13h15 is granted to pupils enrolled in the extracurricular activities. The non-enrolled pupils will have to pay remuneration toward this day care service.

  • Activities & Outings Carried during the Year

The French School organizes several activities : swimming classes at the Olympic swimming pool or the Swedish swimming pool, an educational garden at the school, on an experimental approach barbecues with parents & children, carnival, francophonie performance in collaboration with a Zambian school, visual art or a scientific exhibition at Alliance Française, school fair.

The French school pupils can go to the movies & exhibitions held at the Alliance Française.
